‘Open Gate’ Cut

We shot Pet Peeves on an iPhone 17 Pro, using the Blackmagic Camera app to record ProRes RAW footage unto an external SSD. This setup allowed us to utilize the iPhone’s full camera sensor and get a 4224×3024 image with a 1.4:1 aspect ratio. Our final cut is presented in 3840×2160 16:9, which we framed and extracted out of the raw larger image. Our ‘Open Gate cut’ omits that final framing and instead presents (almost) the entire film exactly as captured on camera with that 1.4:1 aspect ratio. This means some shots include boom poles, lighting equipment, and other unwanted items in the periphery in addition to vignetting around the frame’s perimeter. Regardless, it’s an interesting and different way of experiencing the film.

‘Draft I’ Cut

After a week of editing in late July, we finished this first draft. It is roughly a minute longer than the final version, but is still very close to the final film’s edit. We cut this using corrupted camera proxies, which made the whole film appear bloated by stretching and deforming the image. Color was untouched from the proxies, and sound was barely synced.

‘Picture Lock’ Cut

The Picture Lock cut was exported once we synced the proxies with the camera’s raw footage. This is the cut of the film that Liam & Wes scored, Ryan sound designed, and Connor colored. Although the edit remained locked we changed the opening of the film in late September, removing the scenes of Carlos driving and extending his arrival at Laurel’s front door.
